These camps last one week, and they allow cadets to see what life is like on an RAF base. It is also a great way to socialise, and make friends with people from other squadrons. The most important thing of all is: It's fun!

All cadets will sleep in RAF accommodation blocks (males and females in separate sections of course!) eat at the airman's mess with all the on-duty airmen and Junior NCO's, and visit the various sections around the station. These include Air Traffic Control (the other ATC), the fire section, and any hangars containing aircraft specific to that RAF base. There will also be opportunities to participate in sports, orienteering and night exercises, and any social activities which may be available (such as visits to the cinema etc.).

Of course, like everything in the Corps, some discipline is incurred. There will be a drill competition, uniform will be worn, and room inspections but these, along with all the other activities, earn points for you as an individual and for your flight as a whole. The flight at the end of the week with the highest number of points, or the highest commendations from the staff at the camp, will win the "Best Flight" award.

Each cadet at camp will normally get a flight in the Grob Tutor aircraft and being on an RAF station puts cadets in a perfect position to get opportunity flights on any other aircraft which may have a few spare seats. A few cadets from Porthcawl have had these opportunities, on aircraft including the Chinook helicopter, and the Hercules.

Cadets over 16 years of age may receive a Work Experience placement whilst on the camp where they see first-hand exactly what a job within the Royal Air Force entails. These include working with the RAF police, trying Air Traffic Control, or even working first-hand in the airman's mess!

Each RAF Station has an Air Cadet Liaison Officer (ACLO) who will help to ensure that the camp runs smoothly and that as many opportunities are available to cadets as possible.
